The internship

During my internship, I was recognized as a versatile designer, working on research, UX, UI, visual design, wireframes, motion design, and more.

Here, I present a major project in which I played a key role. Please note that the project has been white-labelled due to an NDA

02 COntext

Forced Gamification

The existing physical game faced issues like information overload, lengthy gameplay, and forced gamification. Learning a PDF step-by-step based on dice rolls is ineffective gamification.

03 THE PROBLEM

Condensing a PDF into a turn based learning game simply doesn't work

Instead of the traditional method of learning the warehouse processes through a manual, the team wanted to design a game that would help the learners have a pleasant learning exprerience.

Constraints

A two month deadline, because we had to release the first iteration

Single player. The client wanted was specific on a single player game, but also wanted to encourage learning

More than static. We had to design a game that would be hosted online and can be accessed by anyone at the company. The game required some dynamic elements as well

THE CHALLENGE

How can we simplify and transform complex processes into an engaging digital game?

North star design principles

Concise clarity

Clear, informative and engaging interface

Balancing fun and functionality

Players should have fun, but the learning should be validated

Product excellence

Overdeliver with design, while maintaining a corporate language

Scalability

Ensure that the first iteration can be used to scale up the entire game

Timeline

04 Synthesis

Finding structure amidst the chaos

We created a user flow diagram of the existing game to understand the various flows and scenarios within the warehouse.

Insights

Player has to go through 132 different steps in order to finish the game

The game is not linear, there are multiple branches. The player route is decided based on dice rolls, and card picking system

Player has to play the game multiple times to finish all the flows

From the extensive user flow, we identified the shortest path with 31 steps and proposed it as the MVP.

MVP First

The ideal flow has minimal deviations, and represents the shortest process in the warehouse

05 Storyboard

The backbone of the game

We designed storyboards to illustrate the key activities for the ideal flow.

Ideal flow

These are the key daily steps at the warehouse, with no discrepancies or special handling required, making them the ideal flow.

Each category has its own sub-processes, for which we created specific activities.

Appointment booking

Inbound trucks schedule appointment with the Redoco warehouse

Docking & Locking

The inbound trucks are docked at the warehouse

Receiving the inbound goods

The goods from the trucks are received and unloaded

Packing of outbound goods

The outbound goods are prepped and packed

Inspection and loading of goods

Final inspection is done and the goods are loaded to the outbound trucks

Undocking & exit of trucks

The trucks exit with the outbound goods

06 Visual Design

Fun & Functionality

Using the storyboard as a reference, we crafted designs that were both fun and professional. After several iterations, the final design was chosen.

Cards

The card component was highly-critical from a content-organization perspective. It was designed to prioritize readability while accounting for responsiveness, flexibility and versatility.

Vector Graphics

We created complex SVGs to animate the entire game in Figma, but the file lagged quite a bit due to its size. 😅

07 Final Design & Prototyping

Bringing to life

With all the design elements finalized, we built the game in Figma. This helped the client experience the game and gave the developers a clear understanding of its functionality.

08 Testing

A huge success

SME Feedback

"The team exceeded our expectations, the activities designed are on point and would greatly enhance the learning experience of the folks here at Redoco"

Task completion

100% task completion and average gameplay duration was 20 mins for ideal flow

Task efficiency

92% task overall relative efficiency

09 Takeaways

Learning

Cross functional collaboration

Communicating with devs and also using my knowledge of dev as well made sure we met the technical requirements

Scalability

Ensured our Phase 1 could be scaled to cover the entire flow of the game

Balancing fun and functionality

Essential training material is covered without compromising on fun

User-Centered Design Focus

The users have a knowledge of warehouse functionality. We took that into consideration while designing the experience

Absolute banger of a time at UST

Hey! hope you had fun. I have done more work with the talented team at UST. Since all of them are under NDAs, I have created a presentation, if you would like to see the awesome work I did, please get in touch with me 😄
